Is "Furry" a religon?A while a go my brother saidd to me "Well, you go on sites and download cartoon porn almost every day, almost like a relgon." ...And it got me thinking...is "furry" a religon?...Does that make Max Black Rabbit and Erick W. Schwartz gods?
|
Tecoon
|
First of all, who's Max Black Rabbit and Erick W. Schwartz?
And no, it's not a religion. There are no gods, there are no prayers or ceremonies praising those gods or spirits dealing with furries in any way. Now, to use the term "religiously" does not mean it's a religion, it's just a term for something you do constantly and pretty much wthout fail. (ie "You religiously watch that show every week").

It may not be a religion but i am extremaly devoted to it.

I can say from experience...NO it is NOT a religion.
I belonged (well...DO belong) to a fandom that see's themselves as a religion because they have deitys & rules on how to live right ect.
& furry is NOTHING like that, trust me lol
|
Morgana

Hmm, a religion? I wouldn't be too sure about it being a religion, a way life possibly but certanly not a religion...some religions like to control you and keep you under the thumb...or is that politicians too?
|
Loupgaros
|
Let's see. What do religions have in common?
1)A common dogma (especially for the monotheistic ones)
2)Rules and regulations for life, usually centred around peace and 'can we get along please?'
3)Prophets and leaders.
I'm sure you could argue that the furry fandom has these qualities but as each fur lives their lives differently, I think we have no common creed.

*blinks* That sounded like a very strange exchange.... Mind you, I knew someone who mourned the loss of Richey Edwards from the Manic Street Preachers on the day he left the band.... Hmm, she was just as wacky as him too.

Ehem.
You are referring to the "Juggalo" culture. I would say that was probably at the gathering, but I dunno.
I'm not a big fan of ICP, their good and all, but I like Twizted better.

-sighs- I celebrate his death day every year. Me and my friend started this when we were like 13 or 14, and Im going to be 21 this year >.<

*raises eyebrow* celebrate a star's death? Surely you just need to watch what films or tv series they were in to remember them?
|
Kitty

I've never celebrated or mourned a star's death... plus why would you? The stars say they want privacy so give them privacy while they're alive and dead.

Well, I guess you can call me quite the weirdo, but KC is one of the reasons I ever picked up a guitar. His death symoblizes something to people like me, and if you don't understand it than oh well.

Who IS Kurt Cobain exactly? I've heard his name a few times... but I have no idea who he is except that he was a musician of some kind.

Kurt Cobain was the lead singer in the band Nirvana. He killed himself a while back & his fans tend to believe he was murdered, ask Jerry when we go to SF. hehe

LOL! Nirvana was never even that good... kind of a silly thing to mourn.
And yeah, I don't really believe in mourning ANYONE'S death, except maybe (and I stress "maybe") a loved one or relative. Never a singer or celebrity, since you never even knew them personally (most likely). It's just stupid to take a chunk of time out of your life to do anything for someone that's died, especially if it's every year. I don't think most people would want that, I know I wouldn't. As long as the people close to me remembered me, that's all I'd need.

Ehem. Don't get me started on this subject Tecoon. You really don't want to go there.
Some people let different things effect their lives in different ways. Some people turn to religion, some turn to drugs, some turn to music, some people turn to really weird shit (IE Furry). MUSIC just happens to be my muse. If you MUST know, Nirvana was one of THE most influential bands of the 90's. Alot of todays bands still use their riffs and methods of playing in their music. To Nirvana fans, its not about the music, the 3 chord riffs, or the on stage antics. Its about what he represented, it was about rebellion, and it was a very big thing back then.
Lots of people think the way I did. Kurt Cobain represented something in all of us, and as I said, was the reason I picked up a 98 Telecaster and cranked out bowie riffs. He inspired me to do what I had always wanted to do. Rebel against the grain, be myself. I have a sweatshirt, its striped, just like the one he always wore. and I own 17 nirvana/KC shirts, and I have met Dave Grohl.
Sara, your a juggalo, you can at least understand what I'm saying, at least a little bit?
|

|
Some good points raised. I won't wade into the Nirvana debate because I find that pointless. All bands are good in their own way.... well, except third-division punk bands (but I'm a prog-rock chick so I'm bound to think that).
I have never felt very 'religious' as a fur or as a music fan (except for Goldfrapp) but I see where people think it could be a religion.
Hmm, think I said a few things that contradicted each other but I write as I speak...

LOL no prob...like I was telling Tecoon last night, my friends & I grew up in this backwoods town in CA right in the middle of the mountains & redwoods....Music is all we had! LOL
following a band/culture like a religion I think can be fun as long as you always remember that it's more of a fantasy game for the most part...heaven forbid I start thinking I'm really a humanoid thylacine
My faith does put emphasis on animals & spirits (as you know hehe) but I always seperate my real religion & my fandom followings

LOL not by a long shot. It was only the genius/over-ratedness of Kurt Cobain debate that went a bit off-topic, but we came back in the end! Music debates spark that though.

These days you can pretty much make anything into a religion( thats why I am an atheist). Just devote enough time and effort and anything can become religous.
and I dont really care for Kurt but you gotta sympathize for someone who killed themselves while taking drugs.
I only salute DimeBag Darrel on his death day.

Furry bein a religion......if you say a religion is a way of life....yes i would say it is......at least to me it is.....i have a great distayste fur what humans have dun to me in the past and i sometimes wonder what will happen cus of the things they do, they are racist and some of the most hateful creatures on this earth.....if they dont learn to change their ways.....they will only make the earth a barren wasteland from all the wars and distruction they cause.
Im furry because i believe in love and peace....and humans have hurt me too damned much.

thats the thing, i agree with her point of veiw, animals have never hurt me, humans are the only things that have caused me pain, ever have a dog flip you off and call you a bunch of slurs? no, humans are the things that do that.
|
RabidCoyote
|
heres the thing, thats what they think, if you take that to heart, then your no better then them, all that counts is what you think of you self, most people are assholes, yes, but not all, as for anmials, there allright,

electricfuryrc10t4

i havent ever lashed out against a anti or a griefer at SL unless they attacked furst...even then i dont fight back, cus thats not the way i am, humans are violent, not furries
|
RabidCoyote
|
umm.. dude, were all humans geniticaly, only mentaly are we furrys, tecnicaly(sp?), and dont hate me for this, but were all humans here, we have only created a second personalty that is that of a anthropomorphic anmial, hence, furry is teconaly only a mind set, almost that of sksaphrenia(also sp) unless of course you have paws and a tail, and bark at the mailman!
i dont want to offend anyone with that statment, only stating the facts,
|
Tecoon

I find that to be true. Though I like my "fursona", I fully accept the knowledge that I am human, and quite enjoy being one, aposable thumbs and all (j/k)

SL is Second Life www.secondlife.com its a big online MMO with a furry base, and griefers cause trouble like logging you into other areas thru push weaponry......like it says.....but it can push you literally sims away.....very bad stuff....and Luskwood is a big furry hangout spot sorta....its where u can purchase furry avatairs and it attracts a furry crowd

It's all in how you approach it, my friends. Many people in the fandom embrace an Indian style totemistic spirituality, either animals as spirit guides or even posessing the souls of a particular animal. Sure, you can agree that it's a bastardised form of totemistic animal worship; but then you'd have to say Wicca isn't a real religion either. After all, Wicca is just bits and pieces from various Pagan beliefs that Gerald Gardner pieced together to make his religion sometime around the 40's.
On the other hand, not everybody in the fandom is here for the spirituality aspect. Some are here to peruse the works of budding artists and writers. Some want to roleplay. And, yes, unfortunately some are here to --shudders- 'yiff'...
Just like everything else in the fandom, it boils down to the simplest yet most complicated of things. Opinion.
Just like the line where Furry begins and ends, what animals are 'Furry' and which are not, and so many other debates; this one is just down to the opinion of the individual. I'm not going to say yea or nay on this one. I'm going to let every Fur decide for him or her(m) self.

Re: Is "Furry" a religon?ah... as many of people I know would like it to be. Its not that probable just yet unless someone tweeks it some and then feeds it to everyone differently, perhaps it can be clasified as a secret cult or something at the stage it is at now but not a full religion.
|
Karasu_BlackCat
|
True enough. But remember, it's only a cult when your government says it is. Legally, Jehova's Witnesses are a cult, simply because there's some idiotic law that states how old your belief system has to be to be a 'real' religion.
I'm not really one for our political leaders to be telling us whether or not our beliefs are a real religion or just a cult.
|
ZenoBunny
|
Death to all them Jehova's Witnesses.... I may be insulting someone here but in all honesty, I just purly hate them for never leaving me alone...
Not entirly thier fault im sure since in all the forms of religion... that is the worst one yet. I am VERY sure I can annoy everybody here with my drooling hate for every religion that has been created but I guess thats what I get for learning about the bad half of something before learning anything good about it.

I don't think Furry is a religon-maybe a way to live, and a different point of view on life, but still. I'm a devoted Christian as well as a fur, and I they're not in the same catagory. It's rather like...well...you could be an African American and still be Catholic, right? And you could be Chinese, and be a new age Wiccan (though I don't suggest it-sounds like a pretty tough life). All in all, in my opinion, you can use your fursona however you want. Personally, no one I know IRL knows that I'm a furry. All they see is a silly, somewhat strange girl who sits in the corner at dances and sings "everytime we touch" everytime she passes a couple making out at school. (Of which there are quite a few, unfortunately. My school sucks.) But my Ginny personality feels much more like the creature my Creator wanted me to be. And I intend to embrace that, without neglecting my religious duties.
Thank you. Sorry if I gave you a headache from reading all that. *blushes*

For me, I really don't consider furry a religion, because if furry ever became a religion, it would just join the fight of the religions, where all religions fight for there beliefs, and that wouldnt be right... furry life was never meant to be that way. (That's also why i never really choose to belive in a religion)

Oh great... Religion and such! >_>
FIRST THINGS FIRST! If we want to know if something is a religion or not, than we need to figure out what Religion is.
So far, I have come to think that a Religion is basicly a set of belifes that is commonly excepted. A religion is more like a tool that is used to define a persons morals or belifes.
What I hate about us humans is our tendency to group things in one group only. We draw a line on the ground and than say that each side is differnt.
0.0 I will stop now, because I will end up writing many pages about this subject. (I have a habbit of talking alot)
Religion is connected with culture, as long as there are people, there will be belifes, there will be religion.
Pilgrams moved to America to seek out their own religion! Without religion, there would be no America! (Might of happened later, but it would of been WAY differnt.)
Without religion there would be no christmes too...

I cant believe this is still a topic! wow... we havent settled this yet? well... there are so many different opinions on the matter. Furry is Furry, it is what it is... does it really matter if some think its a religion or not? In my opinion... we are all what we believe we are... so you think that furry is a religion, good for you... have fun with that. You dont? ok, again, have fun with that... I still dont see why it matters what others believe.
my 2 cents have been deposited.

'Course it matters what others believe. Otherwise, how would we have any discussion whatsoever?
